Press Release
Wirral Metropolitan College Student, Amie Summers, Aged 21, from Eastham Wirral, a Childhood Education student, has been awarded a Prestigious Liverpool John Moores University Good Citizen Award.
Liverpool John Moores University Good Citizen Awards are presented in nearly 1,000 schools and colleges across the North West. These awards recognise the often overlooked contributions that young people make to society today.
The Good Citizen Award was presented to Amie by Sir Peter Sutherland, UN Special representative for International Migration and Development, in recognition of her voluntary and fundraising work for a number of charities based in India, which are providing care and support to people living with leprosy as well as basic childcare support for mothers. Liverpool John Moores University kindly made a donation of £500 to Amie’s fundraising efforts.
Liverpool John Moores University Foundation for Citizenship was established in 1997 thanks to the generous support of Professor E Rex Makin.
Sir Peter Sutherland, who presented the award and delivered a lecture entitled ‘Citizenship, Free Trade and Fair Trade’ at the ceremony, joined BP in 1990 and has been non-executive director of the Royal Bank of Scotland since 2001 and is chairman of the investment bank Goldman Sachs International.
A barrister by profession, he was Ireland’s youngest ever Attorney-General (1981-1984) and served on the European Commission (1985-1989) with specific responsibility for competition policy. At the end of his term, Sir Peter returned to Ireland to become chairman of the Allied Irish Bank, as well as director of a number of other companies including BP.
In June 1993 he became Director-General of the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Sir Peter is widely credited with devising the agreement that made possible the creation of The World Trade Organisation (WTO). He was appointed its first Director General, a position he held until 1995 when he rejoined the board of BP.
In 2006, he was appointed UN Special representative for International Migration and Development. He is also an honorary Ambassador for UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and has previously been a member of the Commission on Human Security.
Knighted in 2004, Sir Peter holds many prestigious awards, including the European Person of the Year Award (1988), the Irish People of the Year Award (1989) and the Consumer for World Trade Annual Award (1994) for distinguished service.
