Activity Fortnight

RaftingStudents from all areas of the college have just enjoyed a very busy and challenging series of activities as part of their enrichment programme.

The events, organised by Enrichment Co-ordinator Jill Collins in association with the Students’ Union and the college’s Outdoor Education team, included kayaking and raft building at West Kirby Marine Lake, 5-a-Side football at Birkenhead Boys Club and the formidable High Ropes challenge at Carlett Park.

This year the 5-a-Side competition fielded a record number of teams with students from Sports Science taking both the ladies’ and men’s trophies. For the first time we had 4 ladies teams taking part in their own fiercely competitive league with the eventual winners being RJACAGS FC. For the lads, 22 teams took part in a hectic and exciting competition with the boys from Sports Science 2 emerging victorious after a hard fought match against Martyn’s Masters.

climbingStudents from Construction, Carpentry and Joinery, Health and Social Care and Hospitality and Catering braved the cold in kayaks for some fun and games on the water. Every one got soaked, either because they fell or were pushed in by the other students. However, all agreed that they enjoyed the day with some even managing to conquer their fears of the water to emerge with big smiles on their faces and an even bigger sense of pride in their achievements.

High Ropes and team tasks at Carlett Park proved to be as popular as ever with nearly 200 students braving the elements to tackle the high wire, leap of faith and totem pole as well as team building activities which included the pyramid challenge and ‘bomb’ disposal manoeuvre.

Special mention must go the the 1st year hairdressing students who had a 100% ‘climb’ rate so well done to Joyce , Maggie and all their girls.

Particular thanks must go to staff and students from the outdoor education department at Carlett Park who made sure that all the students got the chance to really push themselves to the limits whilst keeping them safe and secure at all times.
