5 Minutes of Fame

Cyril Wood Pictured with John CravenResearchers from the BBC contacted me a couple of weeks ago and told me that they were going to film a feature on the Manchester Ship Canal for their “Countryfile” programme. They were using my book about the Ship Canal as their main reference material and The History Press (formally Tempus Publishing) gave them my contact details.

After an introductory telephone call (lasting half an hour) a meeting was arranged. This meeting took place at Warburton Toll Bridge… one of the locations suggested on the Ship Canal and we spoke for over an hour about the Ship Canal, the proposed feature, trade on the canal and canals in general. I then was asked to make myself available for filming the following Monday when we would go for a cruise along the canal, filming as we went.

The day in question came and I met the team at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum where we boarded a launch that took us along the canal. I was interviewed by John Craven and pointed out points of interest as we reached them. They had to wait for the Liverpool/Manchester Shuttle Barge (that delivers Tesco’s wine to their distribution centre in Manchester) which was running a little late so we stopped at Runcorn where I took my leave of them after a most enjoyable day. Even though the filming took well over an hour I was only on the screen for five minutes or so but most of the archive photographs shown were from my book entitled “The Big Ditch”. The programme was transmitted on Sunday 6th April 2008 at 11.00.

So ends my five minutes of fame.
