Analytical and Forensic Skills

Exciting new twelve week full time course for 16-18 year olds at Carlett Park after Easter! Learn to solve problems using analytical and forensic skills – a different approach to learning practical laboratory techniques! This course is an ideal preparation for the BTEC National Award in Forensic Science and BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science which are now recruiting the 2009 intake. The course will give you confidence in planning and carrying out the analysis of forensic, environmental, pharmaceutical and industrial samples using a range of techniques, including instrumental analysis. The course will run 9.30-4.00pm Mondays and Tuesdays in the laboratories at Carlett Park with a four hour library study period, negotiated with the course tutor at either Carlett Park or Twelve Quays on Wednesdays.

Successful participants will achieve a level 2 key skill in problem-solving. Those subsequently enrolling on an appropriate BTEC National Applied Science course may also be credited with the BTEC National Unit, Practical Chemical Analysis.

Since this course is full time, 16-18 year old students who are eligible, may receive EMA and a subsidised bus pass.

Spirits of the Stone

It’s time to unite.

Long ago, an ancient Viking artefact was buried in the ground to banish an evil curse. When Johnny Glover accidently uncovers it, an Unholy Trinity of Kirkby’s urban myths seize their chance to return to the town and wreak havoc on its inhabitants. Can the people of Kirkby unite to banish these dark spirits of destruction or will they see all that they love descend into chaos?

Follow three generations of the Glover family on a rollercoaster adventure that whirls us from the Liverpool blitz into the modern days of a strong community who stand tall and proud and ready for anything.

But those who come must beware, for the Grey Lady of St Chads, Fishcake Harry and the Man with the Square Head, are looking for a new apprentice. Let’s hope it’s not you!

Through the work of the Everyman and Playhouse Theatre and Community department together with Knowsley Arts and Museums Service, Liverpool playwright Laurence Wilson and director Gav Cross spent time with people in Kirkby last Autumn to research stories for the play. They even planted themselves on a sofa chair in the town centre to collect Kirkby tales from passers by!

Laurence Wilson has created a fast-paced story you can now see on the Everyman stage performed by a cast of 25 Kirkby residents aged from 14 to 83.
