Eight students from across Merseyside have received awards in recognition
of their outstanding voluntary activities and community support.
The students were presented with trophies and certificates at the Further
Education and Sixth-FormColleges Citizenship Awards held by Liverpool John
Moore’s University (LJMU).
Sponsored by the Merseyside Colleges’ Association and O2, the awards
recognise the achievements of college students who offer their own time to
become caring, compassionate and tolerant individualswho have a real sense
of civic responsibility.
From Wirral Met, Lucy Price was selected as Citizenship Award winner for
2009 and was presented with her bronze award – inscribed with the words
‘Men and women for others’ at a ceremony in the Roscoe Roomon Rodney
Street by Lord Alton,Director of the Foundation for Citizenship, and Professor Michael Brown, Vice Chancellor of LJMU.
Lord Alton explained that, now in its eleventh year, the awards: “Promote
the good news stories onMerseyside and highlight the incredible voluntary
work, leadership and generosity of young students.”
Lucy is currently enrolled on the Childhood Studies course, and her tutor
comments that she is a valuablemember of the class, showing commitment
and enthusiasm, supports her peers and is willing to become involved in
many college activities, particularly in fundraising for Comic Relief.
Lucy also does voluntary work at St Peter’s Church, Rock Ferry where she
helps in a club for 2-4 year old children, and one for primary school children aged 6-9. In addition Lucy works in a voluntary capacity for a youth group on Saturdays as well as volunteering to help in summer clubs for both Christian and non-Christian communities.
Last year Lucy abseiled down Leasowe Lighthouse for an organisation
supporting children with leukemia and their families.
As well as her voluntary work, Lucy works hard in College, achieving at a
very high level and with a strong commitment to improve her grades as she
progresses on the course. Her attendance at College has been excellent and
her placement reports have been commendable. She shows great promise
as a childcare worker.
All of the above has been achieved despite the fact that Lucy has some
personal family problems, and she is relied upon to support hermother and
other siblings. This has been instrumental in helping her reach a level of
maturity that has allowed her to copewith all the demands placed on her. For a girl of her age she has taken on a lot of responsibility.
Congratulations to all of the award winning students.
