Attendance

1 Year full-time (up to 16 hours per week)

Level

This is a Level 1 course

Course Outline

During this course you will study beauty therapy skills which will enable you to assist the Beauty Therapist in a salon. This is a good introduction to NVQ level 2.

Course Details

Part of your week will be spent working in the College salons learning basic beauty therapy skills and assisting the Level 2 students by preparing clients for treatment and Level 3 students on health farm days.

You will cover the following:

  • Facial treatments
  • Manicure
  • Preparing the work area
  • Health and Safety

You will also spend time in the College Reception area taking responsibility for the clients entering and leaving the salon.

You will be assessed practically and by completing projects.

During your course there will be opportunities for attending National shows and exhibitions.

You will need to provide your own equipment and overalls. Approximate cost £40.

Entry Guidelines

Specific requirements - Students need to have a genuine interest in Beauty Therapy and must be prepared to be worked upon in practical sessions.

Communication skills - An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or client and to follow verbal instructions from a tutor or client.

Literacy - Minimum Entry 3 and will be expected to work towards Level 1. Much of the course material is presented in work books. Students will need to be able to read these books.

Manual dexterity and physical stamina - Students need the skills for working with customers e.g. directing and preparing the client for treatment. Students may be expected to stand for periods of time and have the skills to clear and tidy work areas.

Before starting your course, you will take assessments in literacy and numeracy to make sure that you are working at the right level.

Assessment Method

Students will be assessed practically and by completing projects.

Additional Information

Students will need to offer a character reference. An interview for all candidates will be arranged with a member of the teaching team where you will have an opportunity to discuss the course and your individual needs.

To ensure all learners are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the programme will be an extended induction period. During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. Your behaviour will also be monitored, including your time management and attendance. Towards the end of the induction period, your course tutor will review your progress. If your course tutor believes the programme does not meet your requirements an appointment will be arranged with you (and possibly your parents) to discuss this assessment and a suitable alternative. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance Team based in the college.
