Introduction to Hairdressing (Ref: G015)

This is a Level 1 course

Course Outline

This level 1 course will give you the skills to enable you to assist in a salon as well as being a good stepping-stone on to the level 2 which is also an evening course and covers basic ladies hairdressing.

Course Details

You will study basic Ladies Hairdressing including shampooing, conditioning, setting and blowdrying hair.

Practical assessments continue throughout the course and written assignments are completed. In addition there are City & Guilds End Tests. Related skills and the required knowledge will also be studied including reception studies, client care, team work and use of resources.

During your course there will be opportunities for attending National shows and exhibitions where you can see some of the countries leading Hairdressers demonstrate. Once a year we hold a College show. All students are welcome to participate.

Entry Guidelines

Specific requirements - Students need to have a genuine interest in Hairdressing.

Communication skills - An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or client and in a group as part of a discussion.

Literacy - Minimum Level 1. Reading - Much of the course material is presented in work books. Students need an ability to read and understand these work books. Technical language will be taught on the course. Writing - Students need to produce written assignments.

Numeracy - Whilst high levels of numeracy are not required, students will need to be able to work with treatment materials, handle money and understand the 24 hour clock system.

Manual dexterity and physical stamina - Students need the skills for fine work such as applying colours, perming and cutting hair. Students may be expected to stand for periods of time.

Assessment Method

Assessment is practical along with written assignments.

Additional Information

Part-time students are expected to have equipment but it will be necessary to buy overalls at an approximate cost of £25.

Fee remission may be available

Opportunities

You may gain positions working as a stylist in hairdressing salons in the UK area and abroad, on cruise liners, in theatre, films and television. Progression onto Level 2 Hairdressing.
