This course provides:
- areas of retail knowledge for those working, or hoping to gain employment, in the retail sector
- skills required in the customer service industry - managing customer expectations and understanding the impact of effective customer service on an organisation

Core Units
- Understanding customer service in the retail sector
- Understanding how a retail business maintains Health and Safety on its premises
- Understanding the retail selling process
- Understanding how individuals and teams contribute to the effectiveness of a retail business
Optional Units
- Understanding the handling of customer payments in a retail business
- Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock in a retail business

Key skills (Communication and Application of Number) form part of the course and should help you gain employment.
Entry Guidelines
Specific requirements - Students need to have a genuine interest in Retail/Customer Service as a long term career. Students may be expected to work under pressure.
Communication skills - An ability to communicate one to one e.g. to a tutor or customer and in a group as part of a discussion.
Literacy - Minimum Level 1. Reading - Much of the course material is presented in work books. Students need an ability to read and understand these work books. Writing - Students need to produce written assignments.
Numeracy - Numeracy skills are required as students will need to be able to handle money.
Before starting your course, you will take assessments in literacy and numeracy to make sure that you are working at the right level.
Additional Information
An interview for all candidates will be arranged with a member of the teaching team where you will have an opportunity to discuss the course.
To ensure all learners are enrolled on the right course of study, the first few weeks of the programme will be an extended induction period. During this time your communication, numeracy and study skills will be assessed as well as your own preferred method of learning. Your behaviour will also be monitored, including your time management and attendance. Towards the end of the induction period, your course tutor will review your progress. If your course tutor believes the programme does not meet your requirements an appointment will be arranged with you (and possibly your parents) to discuss this assessment and a suitable alternative. This may include further assistance from the Advice and Guidance Team based in the college.
