The UK life science Industry is an example of a high tech and innovative industry where excellence in Science is translated into commercial success, requiring highly skilled workers and strong collaboration between the industry, academia and the public sector. To enable us to develop new talent and to contribute to future growth we have worked together with Cogent to develop the Life Sciences Higher Level Apprenticeship for Chemical Science & Life Science Professionals.

The apprentice framework will offer pathways in three areas; – Chemical sciences, Life sciences or Healthcare Science; suitable for a range of different job roles and generally takes 3 years to achieve level 5 and 2 years to achieve level 4.

The qualifications that will be embedded into the HA Science frameworks are:

• BTEC HND Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry
• BTEC HND Diploma in Biological Sciences for Industry
• BTEC HNC Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry
• BTEC HNC Diploma in Biological Sciences for Industry

The framework will be mapped to the requirements of the new Science Council Technician registers so the higher apprentice will be able to gain professional recognition initially as a Registered Technician (RSciTech) and on completion of the program as a Registered Scientist (RSci)

The apprenticeship frameworks contain qualifications that are sufficiently flexible to allow the learner and their employer to select modules that best meet the needs of the job role, whilst providing the generic knowledge and competences that are required for jobs at each level.

The competence element is contained within the main academic qualification, recognising the complexity of the apprentice’s job role.

Progression is possible through the frameworks or individuals that meet the entry requirements can join the apprenticeship journey at any framework level. The Higher Apprenticeship has been designed to allow progression onto a BSc programme at level 6 with the apprentice topping up their qualification through flexible part-time modules leading to a BSC Honours degree.

For the employer the benefits include; growing their own, retention within the company, understanding of company values, and progression to become managers and supervisors. HLAs can be the key to improving retention by up skilling and supporting the existing workforce and securing a supply of home grown talent to sustain the future of the Life Sciences sector in the UK.
