Please read some of the information below and visit the web site www.wirralct.nhs.uk, it’s your decision to fill in the form, but remember, as we get older we may need community help, a visit from the Community Nursing team, Podiatrist, Physiotherapist or need to go to the walk in centres, so to safeguard and improve future services for generations to come, we all need to get involved.

THE macho world of boxing and the therapies usually confined to beauty salons have combined to bring in some champion results – thanks to a Wirral Met student.

Merseyside boxing champion John Donnelly recently took the English super flyweight title – with a little help from the healing hands of complementary therapist Brian Roberts.

Brian (centre) with (left to right) boxer Sean Dodd, Danny Kelly, John Donnelly ans coach Sean Trodden

While studying at College, Brian, 52, has been taking his skills as a complementary therapist into Birkenhead’s Venture Boxing Club where, he admits, the initiative was something of a groundbreaking
move.

He said:

“It was completely new territory for all of us. I’m still retraining for my new career and it was something the boxers hadn’t experienced before.I’ve been working with John and two other professional boxers there, treating them after their training sessions. The results have been brilliant with, for instance, boxers knocking valuable seconds off their previous times during training programmes.”

Brian, who was working in a stressful environment as a civil servant in Birkenhead before beginning his studies two years ago, added:

“I was made up when John won the English title and I’d like to think I’d helped him to get there. He’s now in training for the British title in May, and we’re all hoping he’s going to come home with that one too.”

John’s trainer, Danny Kelly, said:

“Brian’s work with John has made such a difference. As it got closer to the fight, he was training two or three times a day. His muscles were tightening up but Brian’s magic touch enabled him to recover so much quicker.”

Brian, who works as a complementary therapist at a salon in New Brighton, had been a civil servant for 30 years when he embarked on a course in Indian head massage at Conway Park. He loved it
so much that he then took his Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies, which he completed in December, and is due to complete Level 4 Sports Massage in the summer.

In June Brian will be putting his skills to good use when he goes to Bosnia as a volunteer with the Healing Hands Network, a charity that provides care and therapies for victims of war. To help him get there visit his charity page and help him get there: http://www.mycharitypage.com/BrianRobertsHHN/

IT’S always exciting being a student – each day brings a new challenge and new horizons to reach for.

That’s why I’m proud to have taken on the position of President and during my term of office will be here to promote what I see is the main role of the Students’ Union – to ensure all our students are
encouraged, supported and inspired to be ambitious and successful.

Wirral Met’s vision is to be an Outstanding College. Its mission is to enhance the economic prosperity of young people, adults and employers through high quality, work-related education and training.
To reach this goal, we must all strive for excellence in everything we do at the College.

We’re experiencing a time of great change and challenge. So there’s no better opportunity to be positive about what’s ahead.

And if there are any issues, let’s work together to address them.

I can’t stress enough the importance of our student input into Wirral Met’s success. We all know about our Student Voice, so let’s make it heard with your ideas and enthusiasm.

For those who don’t know a great deal about the Students’ Union, it’s an independent voluntary student-run organisation with its members elected every year by students.

It reflects the student community within Wirral Met and engages with staff to improve and shape in order to provide a better College experience for everyone.

At the beginning of each College year, in the first term, course reps are nominated by students in their class. These course reps then make up the Student Rep Council that meets once a term on each
campus to discuss current student topics and issues.

From the Student Rep Council, a Student Rep Executive Committee is elected to co-ordinate Students’ Union activities across the whole College, and the committee meets once a month.

The SU President and Vice-President are elected from the Executive Committee to co-ordinate Executive activities. As President, I also attend monthly Curriculum Management Team meetings to relay Students’ Union input.

One of my most important and significant roles is to meet once a month with the Wirral Met Directorate.

My job is to pass on to the Directorate any pressing issues that affect students as well as relay the general mood among the student community. This ensures the student voice is heard at the highest level.

It’s very important to the College to listen to students to get an understanding of a range of views in order to improve the Wirral Met experience.

If you would like something to be discussed between students and senior staff, just let your Course Rep know.

Throughout the year we’ll also be running surveys to

Competitive Salary

Beyond Outstanding

Our journey in recent years has been remarkable. It is a testament to the efforts of the leadership and staff, with the support of an ambitious governor group, that we are in our current position of strength; in touching distance of being rated Outstanding by OfSTED, highly valued by our community and excited about our future -and it is our future that we are focused on.

With a talented staff group and vibrant student community this is a great time to be joining a dynamic and forward thinking organisation. We are seeking a highly motivated and energetic leader with an established reputation as someone who can drive organisational improvement and take us to and beyond our mission to be an Outstanding College.

Key to the future success of our College is a continued and uncompromising focus on excellence in teaching and learning, and growing our local and regional activity. You must therefore have strong external facing credentials,
be a shrewd strategic thinker and a proven leader of a talented team. We have made rapid progress and our new Principal will need to bring a style and motivation that matches our ambitious agenda.

For more information please visit www.veredus.co.uk quoting reference number 13574

For an informal and confidential discussion, please contact our advising consultants at Veredus: Paul Aristides on

Closing date: 28th May 2012

Supported by curriculum staff and members of the Students’ Union and Enrichment team, the group set out from Sedbury Cliffs, Chepstow making their way through Brockweir, Pandy, Hay on Wye, Kington, Knighton, Welshpool, Oswestry, Chirk and Bodfari, before reaching their ultimate destination at Prestatyn 7 days and 177 miles later.

Team work was the key to their success with the students walking in 2 groups to ensure that every inch of the original border between Wales and England was covered. After long days pounding the route, the students spent the evenings either under canvas or in a converted barn planning, coordinating and supporting each other through blisters, aching muscles and mental fatigue for the next stage of their challenge.

After the trip one staff member of the support team commented;

“the students were an absolute credit to the College, their families and most of all themselves and it was a privilege to have been part of such a wonderful example of all that’s good about young people”

In the meantime however, these 7 young people have shared an experience which has already made a huge impact on their own lives, the memory of which they will carry with them on their personal journey into the future.

RECRUITING NOW FOR SEPTEMBER

The UK life science Industry is an example of a high tech and innovative industry where excellence in Science is translated into commercial success, requiring highly skilled workers and strong collaboration between the industry, academia and the public sector. To enable us to develop new talent and to contribute to future growth we have worked together with Cogent to develop the Life Sciences Higher Level Apprenticeship for Chemical Science & Life Science Professionals.

The apprentice framework will offer pathways in three areas; – Chemical sciences, Life sciences or Healthcare Science; suitable for a range of different job roles and generally takes 3 years to achieve level 5 and 2 years to achieve level 4.

The qualifications that will be embedded into the HA Science frameworks are:

BTEC HND Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry

BTEC HND Diploma in Biological Sciences for Industry

BTEC HNC Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry

BTEC HNC Diploma in Biological Sciences for Industry

The framework will be mapped to the requirements of the new Science Council Technician registers so the higher apprentice will be able to gain professional recognition initially as a Registered Technician (RSciTech) and on completion of the program as a Registered Scientist (RSci)

The apprenticeship frameworks contain qualifications that are sufficiently flexible to allow the learner and their employer to select modules that best meet the needs of the job role, whilst providing the generic knowledge and competences that are required for jobs at each level.

The competence element is contained within the main academic qualification, recognising the complexity of the apprentice’s job role.

Progression is possible through the frameworks or individuals that meet the entry requirements can join the apprenticeship journey at any framework level. The Higher Apprenticeship has been designed to allow progression onto a BSc programme at level 6 with the apprentice topping up their qualification through flexible part-time modules leading to a BSC Honours degree.

For the employer the benefits include; growing their own, retention within the company, understanding of company values, and progression to become managers and supervisors. HLAs can be the key to improving retention by up skilling and supporting the existing workforce and securing a supply of home grown talent to sustain the future of the Life Sciences sector in the UK.
