Introduction
The majority of international students who come to Wirral Met, study English with us in their first year before progressing onto other courses either at the College or at other educational establishments within the UK.
Courses run from September to July. However, students are able to join courses at a number of entry dates between September and May.
The courses available are:
- Intensive English (Full-time and part-time, from Beginner to Advanced levels) Cambridge Exams (UCLES)
- English Academic Foundation Course (Preparation for FE/HE)
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
IELTS will form part of each full-time course, where appropriate to the student’s level of English. - FCE (Cambridge First Certificate)
- BEC (Business English Course – Vantage)
- CAE (Cambridge Advanced English)
Foundation English Course
Wirral Metropolitan College now offer an Academic Foundation English programme.
This course ensures that students have the ability and confidence in English language to follow Higher Education courses. However, acceptance on a course of Higher Education cannot be guaranteed.
Course Details
This will be a one-year (September to July) full-time course comprising of intensive tuition on all language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening – to prepare students for access to Higher Education.
Examination
Students will work towards an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination. A score of 6 or 6.5 is the standard entry requirement for British universities, depending on the course of study.
Entry Requirements
Students must have an IELTS score of at least 4.5 or equivalent. Proof of this must be provided on application. Copies of certificates will be acceptable on application; however, original documents must be presented on arrival.
Your level of English will be also assessed on arrival. You will be offered an alternative full-time English course if you do not meet the entry requirements.
Fees
The course will cost £6800 for the full academic year (September to July). Students are expected to enrol for the full year in order to achieve the required IELTS level for university entry at the end of course. The course fee includes tuition, books and materials, one IELTS examination fee, a social programme, and arrangement of Homestay accommodation if required during your studies.

A fee deposit of £2200 and proof of level of English will be required prior to an official offer of a place on the course being made.
Further Education Courses
Wirral Met offers courses in a variety of subjects. International students have the opportunity of studying on these mainstream courses provided that their English is at a suitable level. The College will accept international students with the relevant academic qualifications and a suitable level of English. The exact requirement may vary depending on the course content. The College will assess the English language ability of all students who do not have English as their first language.

Higher Education Courses
Wirral Met aims to provide access to Higher Education through full-time and part-time courses which are designed to be flexible and challenging.
All higher education courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications and have to meet the quality standards demanded by the institutions and/or validating bodies which have approved them. To enable the College to deliver a range of degree and diploma courses we have entered into partnership arrangements with a number of higher education institutions including the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield and Liverpool John Moores University. Higher National Diplomas and certificates are validated by EDEXCEL/BTEC.
International students wishing to study at degree level will need to make an application through UCAS (Universities and College Admissions Service). Application forms can be obtained direct from UCAS. Details of how to do this are available on the UCAS website: http://www.ucas.co.uk. International students who are not studying on a student’s visa and wish to study part-time should contact the Learner Services team for further details.
