English Language Students
If you are coming to the College to study English only, you will be assessed before joining your class. You will then be put into a class where the students are at a similar stage in their English learning as you. We have classes from beginners to advanced levels. All full-time courses within the English Language Unit have a maximum class size of 15.
Students studying Higher or Further Education Courses
When you arrive at the College, your study requirements will be discussed with you and you will be given an assessment to determine your level of English. The course you intend to study will be discussed with you to ensure that you know what is involved and what to expect. If English is not your first language, you will be given an assessment in reading, writing, speaking and listening, this will enable your tutor to assess your English level and ensure you will be placed on an appropriate course of study. If your English is not at the right level for your proposed course of study, we will recommend that you join our Intensive English programme first to equip you with the necessary language skills to progress onto your chosen course.
Your First Days at College
The first week is for making friends and preparing you for your course of study. During this week, we will give you practical advice including discussing any worries you may have. We will also find out what you want from your course and help you decide your learning programme. Students are given an ‘induction’ tour of the College and shown the Learning Resource Centres, Cafe and all the College facilities. Advice is given regarding safety, using the College computers and internet, library services, the IT suites, how to open a bank account, get medical and dental care and much more.
