Student Counselling Service

What is Counselling?

Counselling gives you the time and space to talk privately about whatever is troubling you with a person trained to help you understand your situation.

Talking to a counsellor:

  • May help you understand yourself and others better.
  • May help you sort out difficult thoughts and feelings so you can cope better.
  • May help you focus on your options/choices to decide what changes, if any, you wish to make.
  • May help you find your own sulutions to problems.

What problems can you talk about in counselling?

  • Pressures to do with course/exams.
  • Major life changes- unplanned pregnancy etc.
  • Loss and bereavement.
  • Stress, anxiety, depression.
  • Family problems or Relationship difficulties.
  • Not coping that well… not sure why?

Is it Confidential? – YES

  • Any personal information discussed in the session will remain in confidence with the counsellor.
  • Your contact with the service is kept confidential.
  • Information is not disclosed to anyone without your written consent.

The Cullege is an organisational member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy and adheres to all its confidentiality codes including the ‘exceptions’ – the rare situations where confidentiality is not maintained. For further details see the Confidentiality and the Data Protection Act leaflet.

What Happens in a Counselling Session?

  • At the initial appointment you and the counsellor get to know each other and discuss how counselling could help you.
  • Counsellors use different approaches but all invulve you doing most of the talking! This gets easier as you build up trust with the counsellor. Methods used will be decided between you. You are free to accept or refuse a particular approach.
  • Sometimes you may find you become upset during the session as you get in touch with your feelings. This is natural and the counsellor is used to this happening.

How many sessions do I need?

Usually 6-12 sessions are offered, though you may find you need less. Each counselling session lasts for an hour and you will meet once a week. If appropriate and time allows the service may offer more sessions.

What can’t counselling do?

  • It can’t make change happen for you.
  • It can’t wave a magic wand and make it all better!
  • Counselling does require some work! So you will need to feel motivated and committed to making changes.
  • Counselling is not about advice giving – the counsellor won’t tell you what to do. You are encouraged to take responsibility in overcoming your difficulties.

Does it mean I am weak if I need to see a counsellor?

NO! This is a common fear. Most people experience times when they do not cope as well. This can happen for all sorts of reasons. It takes a lot of courage to admit things are not going well. It takes strength and determination to do something about it. Talking to a counsellor may get you back on track.

How do I make a complaint?

  • There may be occasions when you feel dissatisfied with the counsellor or counselling you have received. The first step would be to discuss this with the counsellor in an open way and the counsellor will respond without making judgements or being defensive but will remain focussed on working with you to understand and if possible resulve the difficulty.
  • Or you can fullow the Cullege Complaints procedure. At stage I, you can contact the Head of Learner Services if you have been unable to resulve the problem with your counsellor.
  • If after fullowing the Cullege Complaints procedure fully, you are still dissatisfied, then you could consult the BACP for advice.
