The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy is a Technical Certificate qualification aimed at learners aged 16-19 who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist.

If you are interested in a career in the beauty therapy industry then this is the course for you. You will spend most of your week in our busy Beauty Salons working on clients. There are also elements that require you to practice your skills at home. .

Course Details

During the course you will be expected to attend National shows and exhibitions where you can see wholesalers and manufacturers of equipment and products. As a world skills centre of excellence we also encourage our learners to enter competitions and particiapte in shows. .

  • Health safety and hygiene
  • Consultation techniques and client care
  • Manicure treatments
  • Pedicure treatments
  • Waxing services
  • Facial treatments
  • Skin type analysis
  • Eyebrow shaping services
  • Eyelash and eyebrow tinting services
  • Make-up applications
  • Anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients whilst providing a range of beauty treatments including facial treatments, skin analysis, manicure, pedicure, waxing, eyelash/eyebrow treatments and make-up applications. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed.

Entry Guidelines

Relevant Level 1 qualification or minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above and GCSE grade 4 or above in English Language.

Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and/or satisfactory reference.

Equipment Required

To learn effectively on your course you will need to use certain items of equipment to undertake particular activities as part of your studies. These will be yours to keep and you will be able to use them for practice at home and in your future career. Assessment Method

You will assessed in a variety of ways to ensure competence in all areas of your course. There are awarding body set assessments to inlcude exams and a graded skills assessment. You will be given homework tasks to help you prepare for the assessments.

Are you aged 16-18?

Study programmes are full-time courses for 16-18 year olds which include:

  • A qualification such as BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Meaningful work experience or preparation for work
  • English and maths, if you don't already have GCSE grade A*-C in English and maths (grade 4 and above)
  • Non-study activities such as tutorials, voluntary work, fund-raising/charity work, sport or trips.
Where can I progress to?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a beauty therapist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • commercial salons
  • destination/day spas
  • independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • care homes

Learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in Beauty Therapy

This study programme is free for students, who are aged 16-18 on 31 August, and students aged 19-24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan.
