When studying on the Level 2 Certificate you will start to develop skills in bookkeeping transactions and controls whilst gaining an understanding of costing, as well as management and administrative processes. Students will also learn to understand the benefits and risks of using accounting software to complete bookkeeping tasks.
The qualifications is approximately equivalent to GCSE grade A-C. (4-9 on the newer grading scale). Units:
- Introduction to Bookkeeping
- Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
- Principles of Costing
- The Business Environment (synoptic assessment also including bookkeeping units)
These are under the new AAT Q2022 qualification, which is available from 1st September 2022.

To study a Level 2 qualification, you will need:
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3, including English and Maths (or L1
Functional Skills in English and
Maths)
OR
A relevant Level 1 qualification with GCSE English and Maths at grade 3 or
above (or L1 Functional Skills in English and Maths)
Satisfactory interview and/or assessment

A requirement of this course is membership with the AAT (The Association of Accounting Technicians). For 2022-2023 the cost of registering for the AAT for this qualification is £172, which must be paid to the AAT. It is advantageous to student learning to pay this as soon as possible, to gain access to the wide range of learning resources available from the AAT.
Please be aware that criminal offences, bankruptcy and IVAs will affect your application for membership with the AAT. See course leader for further details.
Initial unit exams are included in the course fees. Exam resits are an extra cost, which at level 2 is £60 for all exams other than The Business Environment Synoptic, which is £65.
If you are able to access this course for free, you should be aware that you are still required to pay for the extra fees to AAT, any exam resits, and the course books, although you can also apply for a college bursary to help with a contribution towards these costs.
