Our Level 2 Diploma in Engineering — Fabrication & Welding Technology is designed for learners who want to develop real, hands-on engineering skills that lead directly into employment or an apprenticeship within the fabrication and welding sector.
Based at our industry-standard engineering workshops, you'll gain the practical experience and technical knowledge employers across the Liverpool City Region are looking for. This programme is ideal for school leavers aged 16—18 or adult learners looking to retrain or upskill for a career in manufacturing, fabrication, shipbuilding, automotive engineering and wider advanced manufacturing industries.

Course Details
What you'll learn
You will develop core engineering knowledge while building specialist skills in fabrication and welding, including:
Working safely in an engineering environment
Understanding and interpreting technical information
MIG, TIG and MMA welding techniques
Preparing and using fabrication tools, equipment and machinery
Producing welded joints and fabricated components to industry standards
Developing problem-solving and engineering workplace behaviours
These units have a strong practical focus, ensuring you can confidently work with tools, materials, and technical drawings in a real engineering workshop setting.

Entry Guidelines
- You will need 4 GCSE's at Grade 3 or above. One of the 4 GCSE's to be Maths or English at Grade 3 (or Functional Skill level 1) to study at this level.
- If you have a beginner/Introductory qualification in the subject you want to study and a maths or English GCSE at Grade 3 (or Functional Skill level 1) you can study at this level.
- Entry requirements for Level 2 courses in some sectors may be more specific. If you're unsure whether you meet these requirements, don't worry — we can help you find a suitable course that aligns with your skills and experience.

Where can I progress to?
Aspiring Shipbuilder - Level 3
This is a recognised industry based award and as such provides students with knowledge and skills at the level which employers recognise as important to the industry.

Timetable
You will typically be in college for a minimum of 3 days per week. You will receive your individual timetable at the start of your course. -
Equipment Required
Students require the following Personal Protective Equipment to complete this course:
- Flame retardant overalls
- Steel toe capped boots
- Workshop gloves
- Welding mask
- Welding gauntlets
