Wirral Met College is proud to announce that it has been named the Winner of the AoC Beacon Awards in the category of ‘The RCU Award for Support for Students.’ The announcement was made at the Houses of Parliament on Monday 3rd March during AoC College's Week, marking a significant achievement for the college.
The AoC Beacon Awards celebrate best practice and innovation in the Further Education sector, showcasing excellence across a range of categories. Wirral Met College received this award for its innovative and responsive approach to the increasing demand for independent living skills training among High Needs students.
Recognising a rise in sensory processing differences and heightened anxiety levels among students, the college took proactive steps to enhance its support. By collaborating with an external expert in sensory processing and trauma-informed practice, Wirral Met undertook a comprehensive review of its specialist High Needs provision, reshaping both the curriculum and the physical learning environment.
The outcome was the development of a suite of high-specification, fully accessible training rooms, designed to raise students’ aspirations for independent living while supporting sensory regulation needs. These state-of-the-art spaces include specialist sensory regulation areas, enabling students to develop self-regulation strategies and manage their needs effectively.
The project also gave rise to the Neurodiversity Council, a standing student body that actively contributes to shaping the college’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity. By incorporating student voice into the design process and future developments, Wirral Met ensures that students with neurodiverse needs thrive in a mainstream Further Education setting.
The award recognises Wirral Met's outstanding commitment to providing exceptional support for its students. This accolade highlights the college's dedication to creating an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where all students can thrive.
Gill Banks, Principal & CEO of Wirral Met College, said, "This award is a deserved recognition for our amazing Prep for Life team and their collaboration and passion in supporting our students to achieve their individual goals. We are committed to providing tailored support that empowers our students to succeed, and this award inspires us to continue striving for excellence.”
Ste Bailey, Director of Specialist Provision and Support, added, "We’re absolutely delighted to receive this Beacon Award. It reflects the dedication of our staff in supporting students to aim high and achieve their ambitions. Seeing the positive impact this work has on our students' lives is what makes it so rewarding, and we couldn’t be prouder."
The award was accepted by Gill Banks, Principal & CEO, Ste Bailey, Director of Specialist Provision and Support and Henry Cottier, Head of Department, Prep for Life and Supported Internships at the ceremony in London.
Following the announcement, celebrations took place with staff and students from the College’s Prep for Life department, who were instrumental in this achievement. The college community is immensely proud of this accomplishment and looks forward to continuing its mission of providing exceptional student support.
