Principal and Chief Executive Officer

I’m Gill Banks and I am the Principal and CEO.

I have been involved in education since the 1990s starting first as a teacher before moving into management and leadership roles at colleges across the Liverpool City Region and further afield. In 2014, I joined Knowsley Community College as Deputy Principal then Principal before being appointed interim CEO at Coventry College. For the past three years I have worked at the City of Liverpool College as the Deputy Principal. Prior to my career in education I worked for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and in the Travel and Tourism sector.

I’m Kevin Williams. I bring a wealth of experience as a senior leader across education, health, social care, housing and regeneration sectors. Since entering the field of further education in 2014, I have provided permanent and interim consultancy support in many FE colleges including as Finance Director/Vice Principal at Knowsley Community College, Wigan & Leigh College, Craven College and West London College, as well as Interim Principal at Harrogate College.

I'm Chris Carter. I started my journey with the College as a 17 year old student and later returned in 2006 to complete my Certificate in Education whilst volunteering within the Childcare and Early Years department. As a huge advocate for the College and the values that it represents, I have progressed from a teaching role into various management positions and have since become a Vice Principal in Curriculum.

I'm Phil Jones. I started working for the College as an Assistant Principal for STEAM and was appointed as Vice Principal for Quality in 2019. I am a big advocate for apprenticeships, having started my career as an Apprentice Engineer. After completing my apprenticeship, I gained 18 years experience in the commercial vehicle industry before going on to work in further education.

I’m Ste Bailey.  I have been at Wirral Met since 2011, and have worked in the Further Education sector for over 20 years in a variety of leadership roles relating to education, support and safeguarding for students with additional needs and vulnerabilities.  I’m passionate about removing barriers for students and enabling everyone to achieve their full potential.  Prior to working in Further Education, I worked in various voluntary and public sector organisations supporting and teaching adults with learning difficulties and mental health challenges.

I have worked in Further Education for over 16 years. I have been an adult learner myself, returning to re-sit my GCSEs, progressing onto a Degree, then completing Teacher Training. Since then, I have been able to support our students to create their own success stories. I joined the College as a Teacher in 2008, going on to become a Curriculum Leader in 2009. In 2013, I became a College Manager for our Adult Learners, then in 2022 I was appointed as an Assistant Principal, and recently becoming a Curriculum Director for the College.

I’ve held positions at Edge Hill University, St Helens College, Runshaw College and Wigan & Leigh College, focusing on creating environments that empower students to reach their full potential.I am dedicated to creating dynamic environments that empower students to achieve their ambitions. My expertise in curriculum design, strategic leadership and student development equips learners with the resilience, confidence and skills necessary to excel both within college and beyond.

Director - Quality of Education

I’m Ian Carten, I am the Director Quality of Education. I am passionate about teaching & learning, and have worked in Further Education since 1998. I have a wealth of teaching and management experience from working in various Colleges, including Preston College, Blackpool Sixth Form College, Salford City College, and City of Liverpool College. Prior to my career in education I worked in the music industry and throughout the UK as a product specialist for Panasonic.

I’m Jo-Anne Tam.  I have significant experience working within Accounting and Finance, gained in a variety of sectors including Manufacturing, Facilities Management, Fintech and Digital Health Care.  I started my career as an Apprentice Management Accountant within a large multi-national pharmaceutical manufacturer, then using that experience, for the past 15 years I have worked with innovative start-ups/scale-ups helping them create strong, sustainable businesses.

I’m Nick Gribben, the Director of Study Programmes at Wirral Met College.  I joined the College in August 2024, and I have worked in the Further Education sector for over 22 years in a variety of roles from lecturer to senior management.  Prior to my career in Further Education, I worked in Higher Education and the information technology sector.

I'm Andrew Ellams.  I am an experienced business development specialist, as well as a trained teacher.  Prior to further education I worked in the electricity supply industry as a Training and Development Adviser. 

I have held senior posts since 2000 and have worked in permanent, interim and consultancy roles.  I have supported colleges across the country including Halton College, Newcastle College, Hull College, Harrogate College, Easton and Otley College, Knowsley College, West Thames College, Telford College and Oaklands College as well as a consultant with The Consortium Academy Trust in East Yorkshire.

I’m Steve Johnson and I am the Director of Estates and Facilities.

 I started my career within the construction industry, working within the electrical engineering discipline on major capital projects within the UK. Moving to the Further Education sector in 2005, I’ve held senior positions within Facilities Management including strategic roles in the delivery of major capital projects and Estates Strategies for NCG, a group of 7 colleges that include Newcastle College, Newcastle Sixth Form College, Carlisle College, West Lancashire College, Kidderminster College, Lewisham college and Southwark College.

I’m passionate about maximising space utilisation without compromising design and also ensuring the delivery of outstanding learning environments and exceptional student experience.
