This course is a preparation for entry to a degree or Higher Diploma course in health care including Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedics, Operations Dept Practitioner, Occupational Therapy and other related health care professions.
Four modules are studied, these are:
- Human Biology
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Health Studies
In addition a research project will be undertaken chosen from one of the subject areas. Credits are awarded for the Access course modules. To achieve the Access Diploma, you must gain all 60 credits, including a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. There are 20 units worth 3 credits each; 6 units of Biology, 4 of Psychology, 3 of Health Studies, 3 Sociology and 4 development units. 15 units are graded, while 5 must be passed but are not graded. The Access to HE Diploma is awarded by Openawards.org.
This course is for students aged 19plus.
Relevant academic level 2 qualification e.g. Pre Access to Health or Science and GCSE English and maths at Grade 4/C or above or 4 GCSE's at Grade 4/C or above including English and maths.
Applicants need to have relevant health and social care work experience.
For Adult Nursing only, confirmation, in writing, from a university that they will accept Level 2 in English and Maths (discussed at interview).

You need to be aware that to meet entry requirements for specific courses at Universities, you may need particular qualifications in addition to the Access qualification. For example, several courses require maths and English at grade 6/B or above and relevant work experience. You are advised to check the entry requirements for your intended degree course as soon as possible.
