Wirral Met College recently hosted a launch event to celebrate its partnership with Wirral Community NHS Trust. This collaboration is set to provide students with invaluable opportunities for work experience and clear progression routes into careers within the NHS. At its core, the partnership is built on a shared commitment to research and innovation, strengthening the connection between education, healthcare, and community impact.

A highlight of this partnership is the newly established Innovation Hub, located at Wirral Met’s Hamilton campus. The Hub serves as a collaborative space for students, staff, and stakeholders from the Trust, as well as service users and community groups. By working together, these groups will collaborate on projects aimed at improving healthcare services within the Trust and making a broader impact across the community.

The event was an opportunity to celebrate the partnership and included talks from Christine Carter, Vice Principal at Wirral Met College and Dr Eddie Roche, Interim Medical Director at Wirral Community Trust who both highlighted the mutual benefits of the partnership.

Emma Carvell, Head of Quality and Experience at Wirral Community Trust shared her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating “WCHC were delighted to attend the opening of the innovation hub at WMC. This signifies the start of a collaborative relationship and approach to improvement and innovation. Our joint vision was to have a dedicated physical space located in the heart of Birkenhead, to be utilised by WCHC staff, WMC students and wider communities to innovate and improve together.”

Emma continued, “We recognised and felt the energy in the building with it being a hive of activity and learning and felt it a perfect environment to foster creativity. We see the relationship with the students as being mutually beneficial as they can offer their ideas and expertise to healthcare challenges and the trust promoting careers in healthcare, offering opportunities to build knowledge, skills and awareness. Thank you to WMC for hosting such a fantastic event and we are excited about the future!”

Vice Principal Christine Carter, reaffirmed Emma’s sentiment, stating, “Our collaboration with Wirral Community NHS Trust highlights our dedication to preparing students for successful careers through practical experience and innovation. The Innovation Hub aims to provide a space to for education and industry join forces to tackle real-world challenges. We are excited by the opportunities that the partnership will bring to our students to develop their skills whilst making a difference within the local community”

The event was followed by the first official use of the Innovation Hub where plans were made for Wirral Met students to start a project to design and build an outdoor space at Pasture Road Health Centre in Moreton. The project aims to create a wellbeing-focused outdoor area for staff use. This is one of several quality improvements that the students will be co-designing with Trust staff based on what matters most to patients and the community.
