A selection of Wirral Met College’s construction students gained valuable insight into a new project in Wirral Waters with Peel L&P and GMI Construction Group.

Level 3 students developed their knowledge this week during a site visit to Hythe, a new development within the Four Bridges Neighbourhood of Wirral Waters in Birkenhead. Located next door to the College’s Wirral Waters construction campus, Hythe will be a new sustainable office building and is due to complete in late 2021.

During the session, students gained valuable insight into the initial phases of construction and green skills, as well as developing their employability skills, including how to approach potential employers and how to network effectively within the industry.

Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Peel L&P's Wirral Waters, commented: "With the new Tower Road streetscape recently completed, transformational public realm works along Northbank onsite now, and the construction of Hythe progressing at pace, there is now a huge range of learning experiences we can offer local people studying construction.

"Following on from the virtual learning experiences we facilitated during lockdown, having the students onsite and in the open air, witnessing the work going on and speaking with the experts involved, was great to see. This is just the latest chapter in our partnership with Wirral Met College and we look forward to expanding our engagement even further over the coming months and years."

The College’s purpose built construction campus is in a prime position within the Wirral Waters development and is dedicated to creating a workforce for the 30-year master plan.

Working in an educational partnership with Peel L&P, Wirral Met College students will be given the opportunity to engage with ongoing work experience placements, apprenticeship opportunities and further site visits across the Wirral Waters development to prepare them for future employment.

Sue Higginson, Principal and CEO of Wirral Met College, said: “Our Wirral Waters Campus is an iconic building in that it is the first, new build facility in this regeneration area. Now it is full of students developing skills to work in the industry there is no better way to do this than be being on ‘site’, working alongside the employers that are helping us design and deliver so much more than is required for qualifications alone, a competent, confident workforce.”

Applications are open online now for a September 2021 start for those aged 16-18 and 19+ interested in career within the construction.
