This course is a preparation for entry to a Degree or Higher Diploma course in Science subjects that might require Biology and Chemistry. Past students have gone on to study Biology, Biochemistry, Zoology, Marine Biology, Biomedical Science, Forensic Science, Nursing, Nutrition and Animal Behaviour.
Two modules are studied, these are:
- Biology
- Chemistry
In addition a research based assignment will be undertaken, chosen from one of the subject areas.
Credits are awarded for the Access course modules. To achieve the Access Diploma, you must gain all 60 credits, including a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3. There are 20 units of 3 credits each; 10 units of biology, 9 of chemistry plus the research unit. 15 units (45 credits) are graded, while 5 units (15 credits) must be passed but are not graded and used as introductory units to build confidence and knowledge. All units are level 3.
This course is for students aged 19plus.
4 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including two GCSE Science subjects, Maths and English or BTEC Level 2 Applied Science/Pre Access and Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English.
Satisfactory interview and assessment (written/comprehension task)
Office use only. Non Standard 43.Assessment is continuous with reports, essays, tests, assignments and laboratory work. The Access to HE Diploma is awarded by Openawards.org made up of 60 credits.
In addition to lesson time, you will be expected to complete about 16 hours of independent study per week. You will need good organisational skills. It is preferable that you have some IT skills (you will have an opportunity to acquire these).
You should be aware that to meet the entry requirements for specific courses at University, you may need particular qualifications/work experience in addition to the Access qualification. You are advised to check the entry requirements for your intended degree course as soon as possible. When you attend your interview, you will be given the opportunity to discuss how any additional requirements could be met.

This course may enable you to progress onto the following Higher Education courses;
Zoology, Marine Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Genetics, Environmental Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Dental Therapy.
There will be opportunities to attend university open days and other suitable events throughout the course. Obtaining the Access to HE Diploma in Biomedical science does not guarantee entry into any HE course.
